John Terry to get England captaincy back
A week on from the misery of Moscow, John Terry looks like getting for a very public reprieve, with Fabio Capello ready to restore the Chelsea centre-half to the England captaincy for Wednesday night’s friendly against the United States at Wembley.
Terry has been engulfed by self-reproach since missing the penalty that would have sealed a Champions League final triumph for Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium. The defender has been offered by counselling by his club, but the apparent softening of England head coach Capello’s attitude to Terry, who has so far been overlooked as captain in favour of Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand, allows a more immediate improvement in his mental state.
Capello is understood to be ready to hand Terry the armband having been convinced by the tenacity of his end-of-season performances for Chelsea. Previously the 27-year-old had not come high up in the Italian’s estimation, indeed the decision to make Ferdinand captain for the defeat to France in March was widely regarded as a punishment, borne of displeasure at Terry’s aggressive confrontation of referee Mike Riley in an earlier draw against Tottenham.
