Babel injured

Ryan Babel has been ruled out of the Dutch squad for the Euro 2008 finals after suffering an ankle injury in training on Saturday.  Khalid Boulahrouz has been brought in as his replacement.

Its a shame really, because although I’m not a big fan of the position Benitez has been playing him at Liverpool , he did well for them.  I was looking forward to see him shine in this coming tournament.

FIFA congress votes for foreign quota

Looks like Sepp Blatter has got his way with his controversial “6+5 rule” rule which would limit the number of foreign players to 5 in each each team.

In a ballot at FIFA’s 58th Congress, associations voted overwhelmingly. However its not all over because the biggest and richest clubs in Europe and the European Union are against it, so don’t expect this to happen any time soon, if at all.

Chelsea sack Ten Cate

Chelsea have let go of Henk Ten Cate and it will come as a bit of a surprise to the Dutchman.

This is what he had to say on Tuesday:

“Half an hour before Chelsea made the message about Grant officially known, I was called by the chief executive Peter Kenyon.

“He informed me that the departure of Grant will not affect me. I’d rather go on that than all those newspaper reports.

“That appointment was long planned and therefore separate from recent developments.

“In January I had one such evaluation and then we said we would do again after the season. I have a contract until 2010.”

Real Madrid try to ease tension

Looks like Man Utd’s threat to report Real Madrid to Fifa has done the job.

This is what Real president Ramon Calderon had to say:

“We haven’t done, nor will we do anything against the wishes of a club that we consider a friend like Manchester United,”

“Our relationship with Manchester is magnificent and we will not do anything that would violate the will of a team, just as we would not like that done to us.

“We know Manchester doesn’t want to sell and we have nothing to say. It’s a problem between the player and his team.”

ah, nothing like a bit of threatening between friends, eh
